Project--Altered Tin Gift Card Holder

I have quite a large stash of Altoid tins and decided to put them to good use by altering them into holders for gift cards, which fit inside perfectly!
Make up a batch of them to use for birthdays, graduations, Mother's and Father's Day and much more!  So much more personal than just placing the gift card into a plain envelope!

  • Altoid Tin
  • 12" x 12" Scrapbook paper(s)--choose medium weight.                                                               You can get enough for three boxes with one 12" x 12" sheet
  • Template or SVG (see below)
  • Paper cutter and scissors
  • Scoreboard (optional)
  • Tacky Glue
  • Embellishments

Step 1
Cut two top pieces and one bottom from decorative paper using the template (available HERE) or SVG (available HERE).   Cut two strips of decorative paper:  .5" x 11.5" and .75" x 11.5".
Step 2
Using scoreboard, score the narrow strip at .25" lengthwise.  Fold and snip one side from edge of the paper up to the fold.  Score the wide strip at .5" lenghtwise.  Fold and snip the shortest side from edge of the paper up to the fold.  See photo above.
Step 3
Apply the paper to the tin by gluing on the side strips, starting  with the narrow (lid) strip first.  Glue the unsnipped portion to the side of the tin lid.  For the neatest look, start at the back of the tin and add small snips where the hinges are.  Be sure that the bottom of the unsnipped edge lines up with the bottom edge of the lid.  Glue the snipped edges to the top as you go.  You may have to add more snips at the corners in order to get a good fit.
Step 4
Take the wider strip and apply it to the bottom side in the same way.  NOTE:  This strip will not go all the way up the side of the tin (because the lid needs to close properly).  For the best fit, place the fold against the bottom edge of the side.  Again, start at the back, gluing the unsnipped portion to the side, curving the snipped side and gluing to the bottom of the tin.  See photo below.
Step 5
Glue the top and bottom pieces to the tin.  Glue the extra top piece to the inside of the tin*.
Step 6
Embellish as you wish.  *If you wish to add ribbon, do this before you glue the top piece to the tin.  Tuck the edges underneath the top paper piece and then glue to tin.  This will keep the ribbon looking neat.  (See sample pictures at top) Add tissue and gift card.  Present to recipient!
