Scrapbook Layout: Mackinac Island

On this Labor Day travel weekend, it's fitting to show off a layout of one of the most beautiful places in the country to visit--Mackinac Island, Michigan.  Last year we had the good fortune to once again spend a weekend there.  For this layout I used vacation paper from Cloud 9 Design "Trvl Chitchat".
Title and embellishments are stickers from Color bok.   I also used coordinating paper from them for the banner strips.  The large "ribbon" accent is actually a coaster from the restaurant we ate at!

Scrapbook Layout: Summertime Eating

More scrapbook layouts to share.  This one was fun to do using papers from Deja Views' "Soda Pop Summer".  I cut the heading using SCAL and my electronic cutter and the hot dog SVG came from my SUMMER PICNIC SET.  I also used a wavy paper trimmer to add the blue border and a round punch to add the journaling to the flattened bottle caps (Bottle Cap Inc.).

Scrapbook Layout: Explore/Antiqua

Another "one picture" page!  With the addition of a note from the cruise line, a "vacation" velum sticker, coordinating embellishments and a wooden title, I think it turned out okay.
I could have painted or inked this thin wooden title, but I thought it looked great as is.
Oh look...lots of pictures.  I still had my camera here...well I did until just after the lower right photo was taken.  Right in front of the catamaran was where the camera hit the water.  I was handing it off to hubby so we'll never know if he dropped it or I missed putting it into his hand!  Luckily the water didn't damage the memory chip or I would have really been sad.  (And no...months of drying out the camera did not bring it back to life.  So sad...I loved that little Sony.)
The border punch reminds me of waves and the blue vinyl letters were a perfect color match.

"All I Have Seen" Card

As today's featured designer on CARD A DAY BLOG, I made this quick card for the "With Faith" theme.  I say it was quick because I had the blue designer paper base with the square already cut out and the punched border (Martha Stewart) in my "extra parts" basket.  This is where I put all the extra or unused bits and pieces and is usually the first place I go when I need to put together a card.  Nothing is harder for me to do than cut a full 12 x 12 inch piece of designer paper down for a card!  lol
I stamped the sentiment (Stampin' Up--"All I Have Seen") with Coffee Archival Ink on scrap yellow paper then taped it behind the opening.  I thought that there was too much space around the wording so I used my trusty Tim Holtz ruler (which makes it very easy to find the center) and penciled in a border.  Then I went over it with a brown LePen.
Accent is an adhesive chipboard flower from K & Company (SW Nature Icons).  Seam binding ribbon from 7 Gypsies Victorian set.  Everything was attached to a pre-folded ivory card base.

Scrapbook Layout: Barbados

Here's something different for me...a two page layout with just ONE photo in it.  Definitely not my style but I had to do it because on this trip, I didn't have a lot of photos.  You ask why?  If you saw yesterdays layout you probably got a clue....  Yes, my camera was dropped into the ocean on the first shore excursion of our 10 day cruise.  I knew that I could get a good deal on a new one in St. Thomas, but that was almost the end of our trip!  So, I made do with video camera stills (not very good) and a disposable camera (good if you don't put your thumb over the lens).
Again I used the Tim Coffey paper/embellishments and cut the title using SCAL and my electronic cutter.  Brought back the washi tape for this layout too.  Loved the coordinating velum frame.
Here's one thing I did to made do with hardly any pictures and a whole scrapbook to fill up.  I found a large art print of a turtle just like the ones I swam with in Barbados.
I cut the paper to pull the fronds over the picture and tucked in a fish embellishment.
Continued the velum theme by typing my journaling on velum paper.

Scrapbook Layout: St. Thomas

Another vacation layout using the wonderful K & Company Tim Coffey
paper and round embellishments.
Title cut out using SCAL and electronic cutter.  Border punch.
Shading done with Distress Markers.
Velum seahorse also part of matching embellishments.
Cool way to do journaling...on a postcard back.
"Stamp" is from coordinating mini paper pad.
Acrylic sentiment embellishment.  Not part of the Tim Coffey collection but went perfectly!

Scrapbook Layout: Grand Turk

Here's the first of the layouts I created using the wonderful K & Company Tim Coffey "Travel Voyage" pad.  Here's my tip on this vacation layout:  Buy the pad and matching embellishments...it makes putting a special scrapbook together super easy.  In fact, I only used half of the 12 x 12 pad as I split it with my sister.  We also split the embellishments.  Not only did I have enough to complete my scrapbook, I've made quite a few projects with the leftovers.  Very economical!

I used washi tape on both pages and cut the title using SCAL and my electronic cutter.

I used Glossy Accents to attach the shells and sea glass to the paper.

Scrapbook Layout: Father's Day & Sketch Tips

As I mentioned I pumped out quite a few scrapbook pages while I was on vacation a few weeks ago.  One of the ways I was able to do this was to use sketches.  Over the years, I have collected sketch ideas a couple of different ways.  First I would rip ones I liked out of magazines.  I have them in a binder, which makes it very easy to glance through.  Then I started collecting them on my computer.  I would copy and paste the ones I liked onto an ongoing document file.  (One place to find lots of sketch ideas are the challenge blog listing sites like PAPER PLAYFUL.  After all the challenge listings, they post various sketches.) The newest and easiest way to collect sketches is Pinterest.  Just do a search for sketches and you'll have a ton to choose from.  Just create a board and pin away!
If you like the sketch I used above, you can find it at www.gotsketch.blogspot.com.  It is #106.

LWD Design Team Showcase: Shrink Plastic, UTEE and Melting Pot

Time once again to feature a project for the Lone Wolf Designs Design Team.  This time around I'm showcasing two lovely pendants.  This is a very cool technique that uses shrink plastic, Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE) and a Melt Art Melting Pot.  What you get is a piece of jewelry that has a porcelain look to it.  Once you start making them, you won't be able to stop!  You could make matching earrings, pins and more.
All products featured are available through LWD Discount Retail Sales group,
just check the materials list at the bottom of post for SKUs.

PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
You will need a sheet of white shrink plastic.  I used two dies to cut the plastic: Sizzix Baroque and Tattered Florals.  These shrink down to the perfect size for the pendant (if you don't have dies, you could hand cut similar shapes with very sharp scissors).
Next you want to stamp and color the shrink plastic pieces.  Be sure to do this on the shiny side, which is slippery to stamp so be sure to be careful not to smudge.  For the base of the pendant, I stamped (Hero Arts) with Archival Ink (Magenta Hue).  The smaller flower was colored with the same ink.  The larger flower was colored with Alcohol Ink (Pool) using a blending tool and a felt pad.  Be sure all the pieces dry well.  Remember, no hitting them with the heat gun if you're impatient as they will start to shrink!  Then punch a hole in the base at the top for hanging (or leave as is for a pin)..  I used the standard size hole punch as it shrinks down just right to add a jump ring.
While you're stamping and coloring your pieces, get your Melting Pot warmed up.  You'll want a good amount of clear UTEE in the pot and it helps speed things up if you put the cover on it while it's melting.  I also like to keep a bamboo skewer next to the pot so that I can use it to put items in and out (and also to clear the jump ring hole).  Tweezers work as well but you have to clean those off!
Next carefully place your base piece into the hot melted UTEE.  You'll want to use that bamboo skewer to move it around a bit so it shrinks evenly.  Be careful not to touch the ink and don't be concerned if some comes off into the UTEE.  Once it's shrunk, put the skewer through the hole and lift out of the pot, allowing excess UTEE to drip back in.  Place it onto your craft mat to harden.  Do the same with the flower pieces.
Note:  For this project, you absolutely MUST use a craft mat.  It withstands the heat from the melted UTEE and will release the pieces when they are cooled.  Besides, if you don't have one yet, it is something you will find that you use all the time crafting!
There are two ways to attach the flower pieces together.  If you have a lot of UTEE on your pieces, simply put them together and blast with the heat gun.  It will melt the UTEE and fuse the two pieces together.  If you don't have enough UTEE, just use Glossy Accents to attach them.  I used both methods on my two pieces.
Now it's time to embellish and decorate your pendant.  If you have charms or other metal items that aren't the right color for your project, use Ranger's Patina to change them.  For my pendants, I used the Silver to change the leaves and flamingo from gold to silver.  Add a jump ring to the top for hanging.
Here's a closer look at pendant #1.  I used beads, pearls, charms and a piece of an old rhinestone earring to embellish.  Once everything was attached with Glossy accents and dry, I added a coat of Pearl Alcohol Ink Mixative to give it a soft and feminine look.  I took narrow ivory organza ribbon and added a clasp and jump ring to the ends to create the necklace the pendant hangs from.
UPDATE!  Pendant #1 will be auctioned off to benefit bulldog rescue.  Please "Like" FACEBOOK AUCTION FOR DETROIT BULLDOG RESCUE being held Sept. 20 -22, 2013!
And here's pendant #2 which is bolder and brighter than the first...perfect for summer.  Again I embellished with almost the same items...just put them together a little differently.  Instead of the rhinestone flower, I added a flamingo charm.  To color the pearls, I used the same Pool AI.  Just put your pearl on the craft sheet and add a drop of AI on top of it.  Once it dries, it's permanent and it's an easy clean up!  Pendant hangs from a simple silver tone chain.

Scrapbook Layout: Mackinac Boat Ride

Here's another layout.
This one features a great SVG die cut of the Mackinac Bridge (which is a freebie from IMAGES BY HEATHER M).  I created the title in SCAL and cut it and the bridge with my electronic cutter from card stock.  The paper is from ColorBok and the page is accented with black photo corners and black Dymo label journaling.

Scrapbook Layout: Chicago Pizza!

The past two weeks my house has been under renovation (floors & cabinets) so things have been HECTIC!  The first week I was also on vacation so in between dealing with the contractors, I was able to take quite a big bite out of my scrapbooking "to do" list.  So over the next few weeks, I'll be posting them along with tips and tricks and maybe a few SVG  and other freebies thrown in as well!
First up is this pizza page.  The paper I used was something that had been in my stash for YEARS.  But it fit the theme perfectly.  Then I had to create the heading...which I did using SCAL and cut on my trusty Cricut.
Tip:  I added an easy highlight strip to the crust using a Picket Fence Distress Marker.  Just this bit of white adds dimension to the crust.  If you don't have a Picket Fence DM in your stash, get one!  It's very versatile and much more subtle than a white gel pen.

"You're The Star" Birthday Card

I think die cuts make it super easy to put together a quick card.  And as the featured designer over at CARD A DAY BLOG today, I was excited to follow the theme of "Using Die Cuts".  As you know, I design SVG electronic cutting files.  Each and every one I put up for free or for sale is test cut.  That means I have a HUGE collection of die cuts ready and waiting to be used.  I decided for my design card to use the movie clapboard from my SVG MOVIE SET.  A scrap of double sided paper (Reminisce Stripe Stock "Ryan") was used as the base.  It wasn't quite long enough but the addition of black glitter tape (American Crafts) took care of that.  I stamped the sentiment with a cheapo stamp from Greenbrier Int. using Archival Jet Black Ink in the center of the clapboard (using a 'Stamp A Ma Jig).
TIP:  The stamped image wasn't quite black enough.  I took a Sharpie and hand colored the missed areas.
Finally I got out the red Dymo tape and created the sentiment.
